A collaborative student 1:1 realization project
Desert Eyes is a transdisciplinary student project with teams of various faculties (FB1/FB2/FB5), disciplines and institutions (Campus Agentur Detmold) of the University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen Lippe developing a large scale architectural installation for the burning man festival 2017 with this year’s motto ‘Radical Ritual’.
The project has been developed by a student team consisting of overall 15 students of the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Media Production and the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture. The project has been initiated within the course C1 Digital Tools and Methods (Prof. Hans Sachs) and the accepted student proposal (LOI-Letter of Intent) to the Burning Man Art Honoraria Grant in the winter term 16/17. It has been mainly supported and further developed by the ‘Detmolder Campusagentur’ lead by Ricarda Jacobi in strong cooperation with the student team. The project has been initiated and led by the ‘Computational Design’ (MID- Master of Integrated Design) master students Yonnie Kweon and Pooya Kamranjam, as their proposal been selected as one of the 2017 Burning Man Art Honoraria projects and the only supported project in Germany in this year.

The Burning Man Festival provides an enormous range of inspiration to create interactive installations, architecture, objects or vehicles. Unlike at a museum where works are usually just exhibited and ought not to be touched, ‘Burning Man’ forms a huge interactive playground.

Within the Core Module C1 Tools & Methods and the short term project ‚Liquid Space‘ MIAD and MID students have developed individual concepts and prototypes of an interactive, kinetic, mobile or adaptive installation. This experimental project was based on the exploration of (open) digital tools, software (plugins) or new materials and techniques in order todesign, develop and generate a functional prototype of such dynamic installation.

Several projects have been awarded by the ‘Burning Man Arts Honoraria Grant’ and one student project has been selected to be supported by Burning Man at the festival 2017. The students have now set up interdisciplinary development and design teams within the University to realize their Art Installation in the Desert of Nevada.
